New tech gives me anxiety. This is easy and functional. Turned my decade old former “smart” TV that was no longer compatible with any streaming service/app into an actual TV again! When it couldn’t connect to the wifi after a few months of use, I had to power down my wifi and do a factory reset on the Chromecast. That was a pain in the ass, but otherwise no issues.

Google Chromecast with Google TV is a very inexpensive and effective way to upgrade your older (non-smart) TVs to utilize the wide variety of streaming services available today. It is very simple to set up, provides great menus for source selection and a very nice, compact voice-controlled remote.Google, founded in 1998, is the largest subsidiary of Alphabet, one of the largest technology firms in the world. Google provides search technology, online advertising, cloud computing, email (Gmail), web browsing (Chrome), navigation (Google Maps), video sharing (YouTube), operating systems (Android), productivity software (Workspace), language translation and many other online services. It also produces consumer electronics products including Pixel smartphones, Google Assistant, Nest smart home devices, wearable devices (Fitbit) and this Chromecast device. Here are the key features:• Google Chromecast with Google TV (Model: G454V)• Provides 1080p (with HDR10) streaming content from a wide range of services• 3.0 inch x 2.5 inch wireless receiver dongle with 3 inch HDMI connection cable• 59 inch USB-A to USB-C power cable• 5 volt, 1.5 amp, 7.5 watt power adapter for USB cable• Remote control with power, volume, home, preset Netflix, & YouTube, Google Assistant buttons• Two AAA alkaline batteries included• Google Assistant voice control through remote• Access to thousands of apps through Google Play• Wireless connectivity: 801.11a/b/g/n/ac• Bluetooth connectivity to remote control• Set up through Google Home app• Full easy to follow on screen instructions• Manufactured from recycled plastic (49% by weight)• One year warrantyThe Chromecast device, cables, power adapter and remote control are all very attractively designed. They are nicely rounded, very compact and their color is a pleasing arctic white called “Snow.” Even the included AAA batteries are a matching white color.Set up is very easy. Simply attach the USB power cord to the included adapter, connect the USB-C end to the wireless receiver dongle and plug that dongle into an HDMI port on the TV. Then use the Google Home app on a smartphone to set up the wireless connection to your network. The device will download firmware updates and it will be ready for use. You can then mate the remote to your TV so that it can control power, volume and (in most cases) the input switching. The menus are very easy to navigate and seems to include all streaming services (Netflix, Prime, Disney, Apple, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount, HBO, Sling, Spotify, YouTube, etc.) plus many free services found in the Google Play app.Connections were solid and provided a very clean data stream for all services I tested. The remote control connects to the dongle via Bluetooth so line-of-sight is not necessary and the range is at least 30 feet. You can safely expect that the device will work perfectly in most home situations, reliably covering multiple rooms. The device is very compact and lightweight so it can be attached to any HDMI port on the TV and just hang unobtrusively behind the TV without straining the wiring. The 59” power cord is long enough to easily reach an available power source. Or, you could just plug in the USB-A end into a USB port on your TV (most TVs have a USB-A port.)No matter how old your digital TV is, this Google Chromecast device will instantly upgrade it to the latest “smart” functionality. In fact, even if your TV has streaming functions you might find that this unit adds some important capability which you did not have (such as voice search or Google Assistant controls). The beautiful, tiny remote gives you access to not just all of the streaming services, but also provides to the full range of Google Assistant capabilities. You can use it to control your lights, thermostat, doorbell cameras, etc. if you utilize Google Nest devices. You can also use the remote to answer questions or do quick searches using the power of Google and the breadth of YouTube to quickly find relevant material.Given the comparable price and basic capabilities, the obvious comparison is to Amazon’s Fire Stick. But I think the Google Chromecast is superior in several aspects. First, it is undeniably more attractive. The beautiful color and shape of the remote is a pleasure to look at. Second, it probably has a broader range of apps available, due to the extensive Google Play library. Finally, because its software is based upon Google search technology, the search function is certainly superior to anything Amazon can offer.I am delighted to give this great and bargain-priced device my full and enthusiastic recommendation!

I don’t have or use Netflix or any other paid streaming services… I just wanted to watch Youtube on my (older, non-smart) TV and this was a cheap way to do so. The remote is fine and small and comfortable, the GUI (user interface) is pretty much what you see on Roku or Amazon streaming devices, so: usable, and even though this 2K version is supposed to be slower than the 4K version, it seems fast/responsive enough to me.The ONLY complaint/comment I’ll make is that for whatever reason, Google has seen fit to disable the ability to share Youtube video (like email a video link to someone) in the Chromecast GUI, unlike when I’ve used Youtube on a PC or small/old Android/Samsung tablet: on those devices, if you want to share a video with a friend, you simply click ‘share’ and choose a destination email address and send. On this Chromecast w/Google TV device, there doesn’t seem to be ANY WAY to share a video at all… I’ve pretty much looked everywhere in the interface (which is finite) and can find no way to do it. Just strange IMO.So, for the price, this is pretty good, at least in the limited way I use it (only watching Youtube). There do seem to be plenty of free content outside of Youtube that the Chromecast gives you access to, but I really haven’t looked into it too much. ALSO: there’s no native (Google) gmail/email app for this device: so you can’t do casual email with it UNLESS you install a basic web browser app (there are a few to choose from) and then use the browser to access gmail. I did this just to see if it worked: it DOES, but it’s kind of clumsy, even for short emails, so I’m not likely to use it for that… it’s odd (again) that Google didn’t see fit for make/provide a basic gmail client for this device, but that’s how it is.Overall, considering features/price, I’d give this product a B+ grade. If it had native email support, and if the Youtube interface was as full-featured as regular Youtube accessed via a web browser (or even just a ten-year-old tablet) I’d have given it an A+

Bought this to replace an 8 year old 2nd gen Chromecast. It is installed on my older dumb Sceptre TV. I wanted to get away from having to cast from my laptop. The setup was fairly easy. First there were system updates that needed to install. I did not want to log into Google on my iPhone so I tried using my android tablet (an older low-grade model). Nothing was happening so I gave up and installed just using the TV.That did require me to type logins and passwords using the remote but I have to say this is the nicest remote I’ve ever used. It just fits in the palm of my hand, is mostly intuitive, and is very easy to navigate. Entering all those emails and passwords using the remote did not lead to any frustration or bad language. To set it up and use it, you have to log into Google or create an account if you don’t have one. For privacy, and because I hate being tracked, I used one of my “spare” Google accounts, rather than the one I use the most. The remote can power the TV or soundbar but not both. Likewise it can control the volume and source selection for either the TV or the soundbar but not both. You get to choose, you can mix and match, and change if you want. I was very surprised that the remote connected easily with my older low-end devices. If you sometimes like ambient mode in the background, you can quickly start it by pressing the back button on the remote when you are on the home page. You can choose the time after which the Chromecast will turn off, and in my case the TV turns off 10 minutes later. You can add or delete streaming services (there might be some that can’t be deleted but hasn’t been an issue for me). I have previously been overwhelmed trying to navigate smart TV app screens at other people’s houses. This just feels a lot easier, maybe because it doesn’t have all the TV/cable stuff. It just makes it easy to access whichever streaming services you use, such as netflix, Hulu, etc., as well as lesser known streaming services.

Was looking for something to make an older TV smart. My old Sony Blu-ray doesn’t include the same apps it did when i bought it, so that’s out, and TV doesn’t have Bluetooth or WiFi, so this really gave me some options. I love the Bluetooth connectivity for audio. Chromecast easily connected to my WiFi, and as an added bonus, the Chromecast remote will operate my TV on/off. Recommended.Update after a couple of weeks: i find the included remote is very “touchy.” It would be so nice if you could go FORWARD to the video you were watching before you accidentally hit the YouTube or Netflix or back button. Navigation if this type is sorely lacking.

This thing is great! I plugged it in, it walked me through the set up, which was very quick It connects all my streaming services so I can see everything I might want to watch in one place. It plays anything I want and it listens to voice commands. I’ve had no problems with it. It’s exactly what I’d hoped!

Thought this could help some peeps. i have 3 Roku ultra’s as well as 2 firestick 4ks. I bought this because it was cheap at the time and i wanted to see what it was all about. My Roku experience:Biggest Pro:I like it because you can turn off and remove everything on the homescreen except the apps that you subscribe to such as netflix. This is especially great if you have kids or older people in the house and just like simplicity.Biggest Con:The only thing i dont like about roku is that you cannot side load apps like Kodi. That is a specific use case that not all people care about though.Firestick experience:Biggest Pro:You can side load apps like Kodi. Again, not all people care about that stuff though.Biggest Con:The homescreen is so cluttered with suggestions for you to watch that it can be overwhelming and/or annoying. Especially since it can be full of suggestions to shows and movies that are only available in apps like MAX that you may not subscribe to. You can easily find yourself spending 20 minutes finding the perfect movie, clicking on it, and then asked to pay money to watch it. Very annoying. Also, the homescreen is so cluttered that it can slow down the interface.Google Chromecast with Google TVMy 2 big Pros:1. You can sideload apps on it just like on the firestick.2. By default, the homescreen is cluttered just like the firestick homescreen. Same annoyances come with it just like the firestick homescreen. But here is the great thing… you can turn this off!!! You can change a setting that puts it in “Apps only mode”. This creates the same simplistic homescreen just like with a Roku. Think of it as putting it in Roku mode.No cons so far. I guess i wish you could choose “firestick mode” or “roku mode” during the setup process. Not that big of a deal to change the setting though.Summary:For me the Chromecast with Google TV is a sweetspot between the Roku and the Firestick. You can get the simplicity of Roku by changing a setting, and then you can also sideload apps like Kodi just like on the Firestick. Best of both worlds.Hope this helps

I really like this! It’s basically the same as AppleTV but scaled down Android style. The remote is simple and connecting devices via Bluetooth is easy. The screen is also easy to navigate. The picture is also very clear.I use this the most with DirecTV and it works fine.As to 1080p vs 4K. For most people 1080p will be fine. For a better experience you’ll want the 4K especially since the price difference is not a lot. But for me using the smaller TV in the bedroom this is fine.Ironically I had difficulty connecting this to the Google Mini (1st addition admittedly) but again it connected to the Echo Dot. Just leave the speaker close to the dongle. Which brings me to the biggest advantage this has over AppleTV: the Exho Dot will connect automatically, albeit after a minute or so. Every time I use my AppleTV I have to reconnect my non-Apple speaker via Bluetooth, which seems to be the easiest option. At least for me. I would also like to see customizable buttons to add different apps (right now all you get is Netflix and YouTube)I’ve tried a few streamers and while they are all good so far, after a day this is one of the best.

I got this for work travel. I spend a lot of time in hotels, and want to watch movies on the full TV screen instead of my phone screen. It took a bit of work, but I got it set up to use my Phone’s WiFi hotspot as it’s network, so I can connect my phone to the Hotel WiFi (which you can’t do with a Chromecast) then turn on my WiFi hotspot so the Chromecast connects to the internet that way. It’s easy to then watch movies or shows from my subscription platforms, or cast movies directly from my phone.I like the new version Chromecasts because they now have more free options like local news and TV shows. I usually turn on the news in my Hotel room just to have noise while getting ready in the morning, this gives me a much wider range of things to watch than the regular hotel programming. My only complaint is the remote is very slippery. I’ve dropped it multiple times, and it will often slide in my hand while I’m trying to press the buttons. Big picture, it’s not a problem, just an annoyance.
