Good to know IAQ – will help me breathe cleaner air. It takes 3 days to calibrate, but not a big deal.

I get an alert any time it is disconnected from WiFi, which is fairly often (WiFi’s fault, not this) unfortunately. Easy to connect/set up. It’s in our cellar so every time I look at the app, we’re in the red/terrible quality because it is so humid down there. Which I expected- it’s a cellar. We just have washer, dryer, and freezer down there. But I wish I could hide that part and just monitor for smoke and co2.

I made the hard-to-believe mistake of leaving my car on in the garage and it spooked me so much, that I decided to install a CO2 detector that can alert me if my garage fills with high levels of exhaust fumes. Fortunately, it hasn’t gone off since I installed it and I hope that it never will (I’m assuming it works). Believe me, it’s not hard to forget to turn off your car, especially with button type ignitions and quiet idling. The detector also senses high temperatures, which I suppose could be useful, but in my case, I live in Florida, so my garage is always hot.

After installing this upstairs, we discovered that our generator was pushing CO2 into the house. The old sensor did not go off. This one not only has an audible alert, it also pings my mobile phone, which allowed me to quickly ventilate and take care of the situation. I’ll be adding more of these in different areas of the house.

This is a combination carbon monoxide / “air quality” monitor from Kidde, a brand best known for fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. This is my first smart product from them and I was genuinely shocked at how good their app is. Setup was one of the most clearly guided and well thought out home automation setup experiences I’ve ever seen, and I’ve set up a _lot_ of gadgets. The wizard was clear and detailed, it called out common gotchas, and the pairing is kicked off by a QR code that’s on both the product itself and the Getting Started guide. Everything about the process was lovely, except the alarm surprising me by sounding the second I plugged it into the wall; that really should happen later as part of a self-test during installation, I think.Well, almost everything was lovely. I was pretty put off by the mandatory step where I was required to enter my home address to continue with no option to skip. Maybe I’m weird, but I try really hard to not have my physical address linked to home automation gear that publishes whether I’m home or away to a cloud service – if a given service gets hacked, I don’t want it to be immediately apparent to an attacker which home the device that’s reporting in belongs to. I ended up giving the service a bogus address and parking the mandatory location pushpin somewhere out in the Pacific Ocean, and then it let me complete setup normally. Frustrating. That small detail aside, the detector is working like a charm. In addition to carbon monoxide, it monitors temperature, humidity and volatile organic compounds. Living in an area that’s frequently affected by wildfire, indoor air quality actually means particles to me, so I was surprised to learn this detector doesn’t have a sensor that monitors that metric (and it therefore won’t be helpful during wildfire season). But I do appreciate the extra information that is here. You can set up alerts for the air quality metrics, but you don’t get a lot of control over them – you can only be alerted by temperature if it’s below 48 degrees or above 92. That’s a bummer because I would have liked to pick up a second one of these to monitor the basement temperature of a vacation home that’s at risk of pipes freezing if a heater gets accidentally turned off – but I want it to alert at a different threshold than 48 degrees. Maybe Kidde can add that functionality in a future version of the app, because this would be a much more elegant solution than most other temperature sensors I’ve encountered. It sounds like I have a lot of quibbles, but those were the only negative things I encountered. Everything else about this is great: the physical design is fine, I liked that you can rotate the blades to install it as horizontal or vertical in your outlet, and navigating the app is straightforward.A family friend once was sickened by a carbon monoxide leak in his home, and ever since he’s implored all of us to take having a detector seriously. This product gives me ten years of peace of mind, plus a slate of additional home monitoring tools that are a nice bonus feature. I’m a fan!

This is a co alarm. it also shows air quality if you install the app and connect it. Good thing for a peace of mind from a trusted brand. The re is a backup battery that works for 10 years. I don’t think you can replace it
