Bought this to replace a google lock that required a wifi connector to be plugged into the wall within sight of the lock. It didn’t work reliably. This lock doesn’t need the wifi connector as it’s built into the unit. With the schlage app, you can connect the lock easily to your wifi network and see your lock in the app. You can unlock and lock the door from anywhere with your phone and see the history of when it was locked and unlocked and by what method such as thumbturn or code. You can program many codes, set them up permanently or for a certain time range. We use this same lock at our Airbnb and it gets programmed for each guest’s stay with thieir desired code. The 4 AA batteries it requires last a long time – upwards of a year or so depending on usage and you can see battery life in the app. I can’t think of any features this lock would need to be improved upon and we’re very happy with the two we have. Highly recommend.

6/27/20 update: still no major issues to date. The lock ‘just works’. We don’t think anything special about it day to day and that’s probably as it should be. Only complaint long term is only way to light the panel at night is to touch a button. Best so far is to memorize wheee the lock button is and press that as it won’t register as a number entry. Batteries don’t last quite as long as they claim (no surprise) but it’s not been particularly hungry either using amazon’s batteries.8/17/19 update: still going strong. Schlage has released several firmware updates but I haven’t been able to tell any difference. So that part has been seamless.I use the Schlage app and not Amazon Key and have had zero problems to date. The lock can not be in both modes at the same time. It’s either an Amazon Key or using Schlage. Without a camera for Amazon to open your front door I’m not sure of the use of letting Amazon manage your lock. The lock in Schlage mode works fine with Alexa.A few hiccups with the app early on where it would act like it forgot or couldn’t find the lock. But that hasn’t happened now for quite a bit. That may have been part of the firmware updates.Anyhow I’d buy it again. Only complaint is that they are expensive and you have to have a locksmith to rekey them if you have more than one and want the keys to match.Original review: Bought this to replace an old Kwikset that had the finish worn off from years in the Florida sun. We will see how well this finish lasts (I replaced the door handle with a matching set as well).Installation was pretty straight forward, though I did have to do a little work on the door jam to install the deeper double plate that comes with Schlage locks (this is important BTW, as it’s what gives these locks a better break in resistance rating over their competitors. Without that plate and extra long screws your lock installation isn’t as secure as it otherwise would be). This unit is much quieter than the lock is replaced, and it’s also more compact. I can still hear it, but it’s not that loud. I also had to go and find some door paint to touch up the areas the old lock covered that this one doesn’t.The app gets bad reviews, but I think that’s because of some of the other locks and not so much the app itself. With this lock, I had zero problems installing it and setting it up. It took a few minutes to join my network and probably 3-5 minutes to do the firmware update. The Alexa skill was also quick and mostly painless.I also setup an account for my wife and shared the lock permissions with her, so she can do everything from her phone as well except delete the lock from her account. Getting this part to work is a little tricky, since it’s not well documented. I only figured out because a Shlage rep had posted on here in reply to one of the other negative reviews about what you needed to do. You have to give them a virtual key but to do that the app wants, on an iPhone anyhow, to automatically share something but it doesn’t tell you what. After some fumbling around I figured out it wanted to send the text of an e-mail with a onetime use password. The app should just do this automatically instead of opening the iOS share menu, as things like AirDrop don’t work (or better yet MAKE AirDrop work for this so I can do the exchange that way!). Likewise, on my wife’s phone the link from this e-mail opened the app store and then took me to the app page which allowed me to launch the app and then it asked me for that code. Seems like the link should just ask if you want to open the app and do that (like Facebook does).Lastly, the app doesn’t know your type of lock in advance, so it gives you the option to use HomeKit right from the first screen, but this lock doesn’t support HomeKit. So that might cause people some grief as well.Overall, I’d say 5 stars for the lock and 3.5 stars for the app, but mostly because of the lack of directions for the shared setup I noted above. I applaud Schlage for participating in reviews and hopefully they will take the feedback to heart. Let’s also hope they spent more than a few minutes thinking about the security of this thing and employed some smart people in the use of good crypto, nonces, etc. so it’s really secure and not hackable. No excuses for that in this day and age when there are many competent security professionals they can pay to design these things.

This Schlage Decode lock is great! I owned the Kevo 2nd Gen previous to this but the Kevo was problematic and did not have as many nice features like this. I’m going to compare the 2 so you know the pros and cons of both.Schlage: Con: You have to get it rekeyed at Lowe’s or HD if you want it rekeyed. Or you have to get a special kit and then you can rekey. Not as simple as Kwikset’s simple rekey technology. Standing on the outside, I open my door inward and my door swings to the right. When first installed, the thumbturn seemed to not fully turn to thrust the deadbolt fully into the lock strike-plate. It turns out, you have to turn on the phone app and then enter the preprogrammed lock combination on the lock panel. Then a note will appear on the phone app to ask to proceed. After telling the App to proceed, the Schlage door lock will open and close and then the thumbturn will function properly.Pro: LOTS. Lock is quiet and smooth in it’s operation of thrusting and retracting the deadbolt. WiFi remote ability included. It pairs with my WiFi router easily since the door location has great signal. I can operate this lock from anywhere in the world using the phone app as long as my phone has internet capability. To operate this lock at the lock itself, locking is simply pushing the lock icon button on the lock’s numbered panel. You can also assign multiple access digit codes on the lock number panel for different people. As a result, everyone can choose his own number code to operate the lock and the App will show who opened and closed the lock based on which codes were used. Takes only a few seconds to enter the number code to open the door and kids love doing this. You can also program it to lock automatically from 30 secs to 4 minutes after it’s been unlocked. I set it to 4 minutes in case I forget to lock my door; it automatically locks in 4 minutes. 30 seconds is too short because I sometimes need to get something from my garage or patio and I don’t want the lock to automatically lock so quickly. Four minutes is plenty of time to go out to do a short errand around the house. It also comes with a real backup key which I hide but have access externally in case the battery runs out or the electronics malfunction. Some of the smart locks don’t have backup mechanical key function and this in my mind is dangerous. Sure, you can put a 9 volt battery to power the lock and it will solve the low internal battery problem but what if the electronics are defective? And who stores a 9 volt battery outside just in case the lock’s battery goes too low? Speaking of batteries, the Schlage App shows the actual battery strength. So far, I’ve used the lock heavily for 1 week and the battery percentage went down 1% so a set of 4 batteries should last 6 months to 1 year. Also, to change the battery, the cover just pulls up and the battery is quickly and easily changed.I really like this Schlage lock.Kevo 2nd Gen – Pro: Can be re-keyed easily. Yes, you can re-key it to use your old keys by just turning the key while in the lock, pushing in a flat metal tool, removing old key, inserting new key, and turning lock. Simple, fast, and easy.Con: Noisier than Schlage when it mechanically moves the deadbolt.Con: Kevo App doesn’t tell what the battery strength is, unlike the Schlage. To change the battery, 3 screws must be removed and the faceplate must be removed and then the battery can be changed. Too big of a hassle when you have to do this monthly.Must use a smart Phone to unlock Kevo and be nearby since it only uses bluetooth. You have to be less than 20 ft to remotely open/lock the Kevo. To use wifi, you have to buy a Wifi adapter costing about $100 extra. No code access. There is no number panel on lock so anyone without a phone cannot open the door without a key. As a result, my 10 year old could never unlock the door. To open, the Kevo app must be opened on the phone and you can remotely open the lock if you are less than 20 ft away since it uses bluetooth. Or if the app is opened in the background, you can touch the “rose face-plate” of the Kevo and it unlocks. However, sometimes this doesn’t work and I would have to use the app to remotely open it or even just use the key. The Kevo is not as reliable as the Schlage and there is no number panel to key directly to the Kevo in case remote operation doesn’t work..So just spend a little more money and get a Schlage Decode. It provides all the features I want in a smart lock and is reliable in it’s operation. Also, make sure the deadbolt travels into the strikeplate easily, without resistance. Otherwise, it’s requires more energy (shortens battery life) and lock may jam.

The instructions in the box plus an installation video that popped up on my phone when I scanned a barcode in the user manual made this a rather easy installation process. I replaced a basic mechanical Schlage deadbolt lock, so the holes were already there.I like the many features such as assigning temp access codes, auto-locking after a specified time, being able to control and configure everything via the free Schlage Home app and various other things. Now our house-sitter won’t lock herself out of the house again when we are away on vacation. It has a BHMA Grade 1 rating, according to the specifications sheet, which is considered the best of the best in locks. You can create from 4-8 digit access codes and store up to 100 different codes via the app.I also like that it is WiFi compatible right out of the box and it doesn’t require an aftermarket hub to connect it through. Mine quickly found and connected directly to my home network router. It only works with 2.4GHz, not 5GHz. Not a big deal with me, I have both. It is Android and iPhone compatible, works with Alexa, Google Assist and my Ring security camera app.So far, I haven’t found anything that I do not like about this Schlage Encode. After slightly more than two months since I installed this it still shows 88% battery life in the app with WiFi enabled the entire time. It looks nice, too. I will update my review if something changes. Here are some hopefully helpful hints to pass on after reading some other reviews where people were having trouble.1. If the battery life on yours is short, make sure that the lock bolt does not bind. There should be no extra friction when you manually operate the lock via the lever, whether you do that with the door open or closed.2. If you cannot see the keypad numbers at night, press the Home button in the bottom left corner of the keypad to wake it up and then you can enter the access code.

We had a $600 very sophisticated LOCKLY installed for our AirBNB rental for little less than a year. What a nightmare. The system had a hub and it would go off the internet on its own, you had to be there to sync it with your phone and power cycle it constantly. Then on top of it it was not intuitive and it took an hour of instructions so they could open it and close it and use it. The best thing we did was throw it away. It was the most stressful for us being long distance property managers but was a total nightmare for our renters. The next best thing we did was to buy this Schlage Encode Lock. First of all Schlage customer service was excellent. We called them before we purchased and they had the right answers. First of all if you are not near your rental property, and you have a trusted handyman as we do, they instructed us on how he could put the app on his phone with my husband’s email and passwords. Our handyman installed the Schlage he said it was a snap, downloading the app with the snap, he synced the lock to his app. He got out of the app. my husband then went into the app on his phone and done. Now if there is any problem our handyman can go over, hubby gets out of app, he gets back in and syncs the lock and etc.Since the October 30th 2023 install our AirBNB have been there now for almost 2 months, with new ones coming in early January. I just got off the phone with our renters and the lock is easy to use there’s been no issues whatsoever. It is very intuitive easy easy. Not once has it gone offline, there has been one Schlage system update which would have thrown our old LOCKLY system off and us to be personally there to sync with our phone. This one no problem. The only negative that our renter brought to our attention this morning is that the batteries need to be replaced often. He said every 3 weeks. We need to look into this, but that said, we left a whole drawer of batteries not anticipating it, but thinking good and wise to do so. It was wise. That said very easy to replace the batteries and the renters didn’t even call us he just handled it. The LOCKLY system was set up so that you need a small tiny Phillips screwdriver and directions to figure out how to replace the batteries. All in all this has been an answer to a prayer on the many issues we’ve had with the previous lock. Hope this helps out others with this review whether you rent or using it personally.

Product: Schlage Encode Smart Wi-Fi DeadboltI read reviews on many of the Wi-Fi locks before deciding on this unit. I am very glad that I chose this one.Modified 12/2/2023 to add battery life notePros: • Materials: All components required for installation and use, including batteries, provided with unit. • Instructions: ok but on-line instructions very good. • Installation: Took about 20 minutes to install and set up. I had to spend a little extra time drilling out the bolt passageway – 1″ bolt mechanism on this unit, 7/8″ on my door before drilling to 1″. • Alexa integration: Simple! Locks and unlocks with code. Voice activations locks no prompt, unlocks after asking for code. • Schlage app: Works fine. Lock/Unlock, set up users, get history of lock activity. Multiple locks may be set up in app. • Battery life: I used the lock about 50-60 times testing it and showing it off. Battery life is at 99%. Batteries are (4) AA. I noticed when installing the lock that it was easy to bind the bolt mechanism with too much torque on the screws. I backed of a bit, added a couple of drops of oil, and the bolt mechanism slides freely. I wonder if those reporting low battery life may have some issue with the bolt moving freely.• Added 12/2/2023: The lock shows 94% battery life in the app. I installed it three weeks ago. If linear battery usage at current rate, the batteries would last about 1 year for this installation. The electric lock motor is used about 6 times a day. • WiFi Connectivity: No issues. Took about 45 seconds to connect. I have a modern 802.11ax Asus router.Cons: • None at this time! I will modify this post if issues arise. • 12/2: Three weeks in – no issues. Works perfectly. I’ll be adding another for a side door.

I researched a bunch on the internet and decided that the Schlage Encode Smart wifi deadbolt was the best lock for our family’s kitchen door to the garage. We did not have a deadbolt on that door, so I hired a locksmith to install the deadbolt. Without me saying anything in advance, he told me that this Encode lock was the only wifi deadbolt that they sold. His customers had too many issues with other brands. He also advised that he could make the key hole identical to our house key if the key fit into the lock at Home Depot. The packaging does allow you to test the key without opening the box. Our house key works perfectly (luckily our front door is also a Schlage). I would have bought the lock at Home Depot (or the locksmith), but I found it significantly cheaper on Amazon. Home Depot would not match the price. We set the auto lock feature to 10 minutes and it does work. We do not use Alexa, so I can’t review that aspect. The app is easy to use. I programmed 4 different codes without any issue. The only negative aspect that I can think of is that we do have to turn on the overhead light at night to see the numbers. I imagine the company designed the lock in this fashion because there is a lesser drain on the batteries? I would much prefer that my batteries last longer, so this is fine with me. We will see how long the batteries last. I would recommend this deadbolt lock.

I am a locksmith and just installed three of these for a customer! They are easy to install just make sure you have a chisel and hammer. I recommend installing the big strike plate and make sure its centered with the bolt. This was a pretty straightforward installation. Again, I am a locksmith and have installed many keypad locks over the years. The strike adjustment is a critical part because if the bolt jams up it will burn the lock out. Sometimes the hole needs to be widened too because the bolt can make it through the plate but still catch on the wood. If this is over your head than just call a locksmith. It’s better to pay more and have locks that work for years than to try and save money and do it yourself and constantly deal with issues. I recommend these for customers that want to focus on the wi-fi feature and use their phones to lock and unlock the door.

Used Schlage locks for years. The ones with keypads have been a great addition to both our home and rental cabins. It’s great not having to carry keys around this property. Just upgraded to the Encode locks. The first one had a broken wire and is being returned, So far, installed two out of the next four without an issue. Recommend installing the batteries in the battery pack and connecting the two halves prior to install just to save yourself time down the road. Encode locks are tied to the Wi-Fi in each building, and allow me to assign codes or open/lock the doors remotely. That is a major asset when guests are locked out and we aren’t on site. In addition, these can be set up with AirBnB to assign codes automatically; that we’ll test next month. Another advantage – when replacing one set of Schlage for another, the bolt assembly does not have to be replaced. Easy to install, secure, and easy to configure. Been using Schlage keypad locks for 10 years now – we won’t be going back to keyed locks any time soon!
